A template decides the layout of your resume: where the header sits, whether there is a sidebar, and how headings and entries look. You can switch templates at any time. Your content, fonts and colors stay the same.

Open your resume

From Documents, open the resume you want to change.

Switch to Design

Select Design at the top of the editor, or press 2 while you are not typing in a field.

Find the Template group

Template is the first group in the Design panel. Use the row of links at the top of the panel (Template, Entries, Type, Color, Page, Advanced) to jump between groups.

The Template group in the Design panel, showing the All, One column, Two columns and ATS-safe filters, a template counter, and thumbnails of the Azurill, Bronzor, Chikorita and Ditgar templates with Azurill checked

Each thumbnail shows the first page of your resume in that template, so you can judge it with your real content. While the thumbnails are being drawn, you briefly see a sample image instead.

The chips above the thumbnails narrow the list:

AllAll 18 templates.
One columnTemplates that read top to bottom in a single column.
Two columnsTemplates with a separate sidebar column.
ATS-safeTemplates with one reading order and plain text headings, which applicant tracking systems read cleanly.

The counter on the right (for example “7 of 18 shown”) tells you how many templates match.

Preview and apply a template#

Preview it on the page

Hover over a thumbnail, or move to it with Tab. The page on the right redraws in that template, and a label above it reads “Previewing name · click to apply”. Nothing is saved yet.

Apply it

Click the thumbnail. The template is applied and a message confirms the change, with an Undo button if you change your mind.

Or go back

Move the pointer away from the thumbnails, or press Esc, to return to your current template.

Hovering over Chikorita previews it on the page before you apply it
Tip

On a phone or tablet, press and hold a thumbnail to preview it, then tap it to apply it. On phones, Design opens as a sheet over the lower half of the page and the templates scroll sideways in a strip.

The 18 templates#

All templates support the same sections and features. They differ only in how they arrange your information. The images below use the same resume in each template.

The Photo side column says where your profile picture sits in the header when you upload one. ”—” means the template draws no header picture. On right-to-left resumes the picture and the name swap sides.

In a one-column template, sections you placed in the sidebar print after the main sections instead of beside them. Bronzor prints them as labelled rows. On two-column templates you can move the sidebar to the other side; see Arranging the layout.

In a single-column header, Onyx and Lapras are the templates that put the picture on the left, with your name and headline beside it on the right. The others either put it on the right (Meowth, Rhyhorn, Scizor, Smeargle, Porygon), centre it above the header (Bronzor, Kakuna), or show no picture (Persian).

Tips for choosing#

  • Match Persian’s preview. In Advanced → Typography, set the heading font to Latin Modern Roman Caps with Regular (400) weight and the body font to Computer Modern Serif, and choose Letter paper. The name and section headings both use the heading font.
  • Applying through job portals? Start with the ATS-safe filter. Two-column layouts can be read out of order by applicant tracking systems, and Check mode warns you when sidebar sections might be affected. See Checking your resume.
  • Lots of experience? Compare how full each thumbnail’s first page looks. After you apply a template, the page count in the zoom bar at the bottom of the page tells you the total.
  • Judge with real content. Because the gallery draws your own resume, fill in your details first and then pick.

Change how entries look#

The Entries group, below Template, arranges the header of each entry: the lines with the company or school, the position, the location and the dates. These settings work with every template and stay when you switch templates.

Header layout#

LayoutWhat it does
StackedTwo rows: the company and location, then the position and dates. This is the default.
One linePuts the company, the position and the dates on one line, wrapping onto the next when they don’t fit. Education adds a line with the grade and location.
CompactPuts the company and the dates on the first row, then the position and location together on one line.
Date columnSets the dates in a narrow column at the start, with the company, position and location beside them.
EyebrowPuts the position and location in a small line in the accent color above a larger company name.

One line and Date column need the full width of the main column. In the sidebar, or in a section split into more than one column, entries use Stacked instead. Date column also moves the dates of Projects, Awards, Certifications and Publications into the column.

Row order#

Row order shows the two header rows, for example “Company · Location” above “Position · Date”. Select the swap button (⇅) to put the position first in every layout, and select it again to put the company back. Education swaps the school and the field of study the same way. Volunteer entries always start with the organization, and an entry with nothing to swap keeps the company or school first.

In the web editor, you can also swap the rows from the page: select an Experience or Education entry, then select Swap rows on its Editing tag.

Accent#

Accent adds the accent color to each entry header: None (the default), Rule (a line under it), Bar (a bar at its start) or Band (a light tint behind it). In a colored sidebar, the accent uses the sidebar’s text color instead.

The Entries group works the same way on a phone and in the Android and iPhone apps, where it is a tab in the design sheet. DOCX and ODT downloads follow Row order but keep their plain layout, without header layouts or accents. Custom styles still apply on top of these settings; see Applying custom styles.

Reset the design settings#

If you have changed a lot of design settings and want a clean slate, open Advanced at the bottom of the Design panel and select Reset design defaults. This resets fonts, text size, line height, colors, level style, the Entries settings, sidebar width, margins, spacing and the icon and underline switches. Your template, paper size, language, date format, section placement and custom CSS stay as they are. A message offers Undo.

The reset doesn’t depend on the template: every template goes back to the same standard settings (IBM Plex Serif at 10 pt, a red accent, circle levels, stacked entry headers and hidden section icons). Pick a font pairing and accent color again afterwards if you want a different starting point.

Note

If Design’s controls are greyed out, the resume is locked. Open the document name menu at the top left and select Unlock editing.
